Building an internal communication tool for Oxfam International, where staff can share information in structured, theme-specific channels

Oxfam is an international charity determined to change the world by mobilizing the power of people against poverty. Their confederation of 18 organizations works together with partners and local communities in more than 90 countries.

With over 10,000 employees, Oxfam had to overcome a sheer amount of e-newsletters and email lists. The organization decided to develop its own internal communication tool with well structured, theme specific channels where staff can share their news and ideas about the organisation.

Why Drupal?

Oxfam’s Internal Communications Network examined the organisation’s internal expectations for a communication tool and chose Drupal 7 as the CMS for the website for the following reasons:

  • Oxfam already used Drupal 6 as a central platform for the confederation’s corporate website
  • The corporate website is already integrated into Oxfam’s centralised authentication system, built with LDAP
  • Drupal offers easily customizable solutions for building an internal website that contains
    • complex permission systems of various roles
    • a dedicated content type for submitting rich content
    • media handling (uploading images, files and videos)
  • Internal staff and hosting environment is already in place for maintaining a Drupal site, so Oxfam can save on training and maintenance costs

Combining Alfresco and Sumus to transmit information

In 2014, Oxfam International hired Pronovix to help with the Drupal development for an Alfresco integration (a document management system).

Sumus, a Drupal intranet, allows Oxfam to store and handle documents (mostly pictures, video and audio files) in groups in a specific order. Alfresco is a content management system that stores files in a library system.

Existing content in Sumus was initially migrated from Sumus to Alfresco with the help of a Drupal-based script we developed. New content is now automatically synchronized between the 2 systems using the Drupal services we implemented.

One Oxfam, working and thinking together

The Oxfamily website wants to inspire Oxfam staff with internal news and provide a vehicle for confederation-wide internal communication needs.

Employees are encouraged to log in every day and keep in touch with Oxfam and its worldwide achievements, whether passively (reading, listening, watching) or actively (posting their views, suggestions and reflections).

Based on our customer’s feedback, we’ve achieved their goals.
