Facing the Deep-Rooted Challenges of Documentation

If you’ve ever struggled to fix deep-rooted documentation issues, you’re not alone. Systemic challenges can quietly stall even the best AI or integration projects, and finding the time, budget, and breakthrough ideas to solve them is rarely straightforward.

So where do you turn for fresh ideas and justification for investment? That’s where the Developer Portal Awards come in.

A Showcase of What’s Possible

The awards program exists to highlight what’s possible when documentation teams get it right: clear strategy, innovation, and measurable impact. Each year, we spotlight standout integration portals that set new benchmarks for clarity, usability, and developer experience.

This year, we are especially excited to introduce a new category:

Best Microportal inside a Developer Portal

This category recognizes an emerging practice of true enablement, particularly in B2B contexts, where the primary goal is to empower users to provide actionable feedback for large, enterprise purchasing decisions.

We are grateful to the awards' jurors, Prince Valluri, Jennifer Rondeau, and Mike Jang among them, who invested so much effort, empathy and curiosity, and their expansive expertise into evaluating the category.

The jury’s discussion captured the complexity of the space and need for microportals perfectly.

“The optimized path to adoption is real complicated at a business level.”

Integration success is not only a technical challenge, it also requires business context and documentation tailored to decision-makers, a nuance that is often overlooked.

Why Microportals Matter

When documentation is designed for decision-makers, “taking the API for a test drive is sometimes out of the question.” This is the true market driver for the microportal: a focused, narrative-driven experience that arises when expense, security, or business constraints prevent early access to a working API key.

The microportal represents a crucial evolution in how documentation is scoped and delivered. It embodies a return to:

“Full narrative documentation for all personas, with all intents.”

It’s an approach defined by highly tailored experiences, often structured around self-contained product modules, such as Accounts Payable or Accounts Receivable.

Because B2B integrations are inherently complex and often constrained by security, microportals must communicate the what, why, and how of a product clearly and effectively. Crucially, they support multiple personas: not just the DevOps engineers implementing the API, but also decision-makers, PMs, and business stakeholders who shape adoption.

Documentation That Enables Decisions

The portals nominated in this category demonstrate that documentation must be:

“Comprehensive enough for a user to make a decision,”

even if a full end-to-end setup isn’t possible.

We invite you to explore the Developer Portal Awards Gala Event highlights and hear insights from our jurors. The award-winning portals offer inspiration and a clear perspective on how to integrate narrative and business context into your own documentation.

Our goal is to provide the insights and perspective needed to push the envelope and overcome systemic challenges, helping your documentation truly enable the user, not just technically, but strategically.

“In my 7th session with the Devportal Awards, I strongly resonate with the user expectations for a decluttered, cognitively accessible, multimodal experience, with all information ready to be served just at the asking. Clear information architecture, effective search, and frictionless onboarding should be table stakes by now. With AI tools, these can be spectacularly augmented, as long as the extensive foundation is there.”
