Vodafone Developer Marketplace Case Study

CAMARA Alliance, Single API Marketplace, and Mature Developer Experience

Summary

Client: Vodafone

Industry: Telecommunications

The partnership between Vodafone and Pronovix began in 2021 to create a single API marketplace where users can access and use Vodafone’s products. Central to this initiative was the development of a self-service one-stop shop developer portal that reduces complexity for the consumers and lowers operational workload. Prior to the collaboration, Vodafone's APIs were spread across various local market implementations, presenting an opportunity to provide a centralised API channel. This would enhance developer experience and ensure streamlined, consistent access to Vodafone’s API based products and services.

Leveraging Zero Gravity, the developer portal was tailored to meet the specific requirements of Vodafone. Furthermore, with the help of Pronovix’s Technical Writer team, the documentation has been updated in 2024 and 2025, and now the portal has a modern look and feel.

About Vodafone

Cornerstone in the telco industry

Vodafone is a leading telecommunications company operating across 15 countries and has 340 million customers. The Vodafone Developer Marketplace, which is mainly external facing, is part of Vodafone Group.

One of Vodafone Developer Marketplace’s missions is to bring their partner’s code closer to the end users by building directly with Vodafone. The new self-service APIs and infrastructure makes it easy to identify, communicate with, and deliver services to people and businesses across the world.

The numbers are compelling: the Marketplace facilitates 155 million Identity API calls annually and supports over 130 billion SMS messages sent and received each year through its messaging API.

The Goals,

the Journey,

and the Outcomes

Business Strategy and CAMARA Alliance

For Vodafone, it was essential to make a single place for developers where all APIs are available. This way Vodafone can:

  • provide a global location for developers to find Vodafone’s APIs,
  • remove telco complexity and make it easier for customers to integrate with Vodafone’s digital products and services,
  • help drive industry adoption for Network APIs by supporting initiatives such as the GSMA Open Gateway and CAMARA API standardisation.

Changes in the Industry

The CAMARA Alliance (supported by the Linux Foundation and in close collaboration with the GSMA, CAMARA) is an open-source project that aims to provide developer-friendly APIs that will harmonize API requirements and definitions across multiple participating operators. In short, CAMARA is a standardized spec schema.

With CAMARA APIs, users can simplify telco network complexity, reduce costs, accelerate technology development, and support application portability. Vodafone realized the importance of the initiative and joined forces with the CAMARA Alliance.

Information & Technical Architecture Workshop, and the Result

The collaboration between Vodafone and Pronovix kicked off with an Information Architecture & Technical Architecture workshop to map out the resources, the requirements, and the possibilities: both the business and technical objectives were pivotal.

The end result is a customized developer portal with frictionless user experience and capabilities discovery. The implementation of self-service solutions has led to a reduction in onboarding time. This means:

  • automated consumption expands the potential audience,
  • reduced go-to-market time facilitates the formation of new partnerships, and
  • CAMARA APIs enable the utilization of the same service across all major telco companies.

Users can rely on the Get Started guide, which gives clear explanations and offers actionable steps. Additionally, it includes an estimated reading time to help manage expectations. If needed, users can ask their questions or check the ‘FAQs and Troubleshooting’.

Features and Further Elements

Mature Developer Experience

Vodafone Developer Marketplace delivers an exceptional developer experience by combining in-depth technical documentation, an integrated sandbox environment, and seamless connections to widely used tools such as Postman.

In addition to the Get Started guide and detailed API-specific documentation, users have access to blog posts covering broader topics to support their onboarding and development journey.

Regarding the sandbox environment, the availability of separate sandbox APIs ensures that users can create sandbox applications whenever needed.

APIs

As Vodafone Developer Marketplace highlights, their APIs have RESTful architecture, clear reference docs and tutorials, sandbox environments, industry standard specifications, and more. With the self-service developer portal, Vodafone can guarantee a seamless user experience.

In the API catalog, it’s possible to filter APIs by the countries they are available.

The API cards show the country where the given API is available: it uses the same taxonomy as the filter. Furthermore, each card includes a title, categories, and a description segment.

Clicking on an API card leads to the API’s landing page. The pages feature components such as ‘API Overview’, ‘Additional information’, and ‘API Specification’ menu items.

App Creation

Pronovix developed a multistep form for the Production App, which is required for the app creation. This way, Vodafone can collect all the necessary information before providing API keys to the users.

An Analytics feature has been developed as well: it can portray crucial data from the created application (such as average response time). This way, consumers can track their application’s performance. With the ability to track application performance, Vodafone enhances customer satisfaction, builds trust, and demonstrates its commitment to reliability and transparency.

When Accessibility and Usability Goes Hand in Hand

The homepage has been tailored to adhere to accessibility standards. As a result, screen readers can accurately read the header text, and keyboard navigation is fully supported.

To simplify navigation, Pronovix made a back to top button-an arrow icon-which appears after a certain number of pixels. This saves users from having to manually scroll back up on lengthy pages.

By clicking on the arrow icon, users will be able to ‘jump back’ to the top. Time of screenshot: 15 April, 2025.

Vodafone’s goal is to maintain WCAG 2.2 AA compliance on the developer portal.

Future

In 2025, the two companies are collaborating on different tasks to evolve the Marketplace. Such tasks require consultancy and Technical Writing services. The two companies had already coordinated to align and update their documentation and content for better consistency.

As highlighted by Simon Berridge-Burley, Product Owner, Vodafone Network API Portfolio,

"The Vodafone developer portal provides an excellent platform for growing the API business across both indirect and direct sales channels. We are now looking to extend its capabilities, streamline the Digital Ordering Journey, and integrate further with key Business Support Systems such as CRM, Service Management, Rating and Billing engines.”
